Encounters’ Artist Abelardo Giron in Cuba

In addition to his work as a painter Abelardo Giron has been preparing to undertake a commission to create a sculpture in Cuba.

His skill as a painter is was greatly valued in his exhibition in Encounters 2015 and it is exciting seeing him move into a new field of artistic expression. His recent work includes this painting of a young child whose openess and innocence is captured so well. But, as with much of Abelardo’s work, the face is not perfect and the child’s features are far from a chocolate box image. This is one of Abelardo’s strengths. He sees beauty in the ordinary and does not seek to idealise. Being human is enough.
